IBM’s Watson is an AI (Artificial Intelligence ) technology. This technology is being used to create groundbreaking developments in the field of artificial intelligence as well as cognitive assistance. Picture the Apple Phone’s Siri but on a far more advanced and higher level available to all in many formats. Watson is capable of scanning documents in multiple formats including: pdf, word, and other common formats. Watson technology can be taught and then use the knowledge it has gained to make it a more efficient tool. The technology can make critical decisions as a result of the data it has taken in, and analyzed. Watson can also interact with the user during this process and is able to display a confidence rating in the information it has gathered, evaluated and analyzed. Watson uses advanced algorithms to distribute statistics, and draw logical conclusions based on the data. The tool is being used in technology, medicine and for business and personal use.

Watson technology is useful in the healthcare industry. Watson can scan large amounts of complex data efficiently. Millions of pieces of data can be scanned rapidly. Data can then be clearly displayed in a readable format and distributed where needed electronically. Graphs and colored charts will be displayed to show the results of the data scanning. Patient care can be revolutionized because patients physicians and care team will have access to the greatest minds in medicine instantly without barriers of geography or time. Watson technology includes the ability for patterns to be noted and analyzed across multiple documents.

“WatsonPaths” is a medical technology software using the Watson engine to cognitively assist medical professionals. This is done as the user communicates with Watson, documents are scanned and analyzed and then user input is gathered by the IBM Watson device. An example of this would be the use of Watson in complex diagnosis decisions. Watson is able to consult millions of documented resources, merge this with user input and then display a medical answer to a question or even a diagnosis. These results are given a confidence rating. The user can then interact with the results by researching them deeper or going another route.

The Watson technology use of the EMR or “Electronic Medical record” has great potential to revolutionize medicine. The simple fact that this technology can draw conclusions from the past medical history of the patient, tests and procedures that have been performed and other clinical information is a great time saving process. Natural language learning capabilities of Watson will allow it to become savvy in medical terms and save the medical professional large amounts of time in gathering much needed patient care information.

The key to this using this technology in the electronic medical record is in that of natural language text recognition. Most devices and computers are not automatically familiar with medical terms. Watson technology will recognized real world medical terms and learn the differential diagnoses related to signs and symptoms. This knowledge in addition to patient history and previous records will give clinicians greater ability to accurately diagnose and effectively treat patients. Watson technology opens new doors in the realm of technology and medicine.
